The oil film between the crankpin/main journal and bearings is too thin while the engine is in operation. In case the main journal and crankpin have roughness, burr, pitting, and line marks it can result in the discontinuation of oil film and failure of bearing causing damage to the crankshaft.

We observed that following these unconventional and nontechnical processes for polishing the crankshaft does not remove the line marks or the various other abnormalities which do get developed. In some cases, since this process has no control excessive taper and ovality are created resulting in the failure of the bearing and crankshaft.

Generally, it is observed that even for the higher diameter of crankpin and main journal of the crankshaft the tolerances do not exceed more than 0.05mm in order to achieve such close tolerances of crankpin and main journal of crankshaft RA power designs and manufactures on-site crankshaft grinding machine which has the capability to maintain the close tolerance of even 0.01mm/0.02mm which is far better than the close tolerance specified by the engine manufacturers.

Crankshaft Grinding Machine for Small Diameter – RA Power Solutions

For the smaller diameter of the crankpin, it is not possible to undertake the grinding by taking the reference of radius fillet due to the space constraints.
